Nearly three weeks after the fire, Josephine Barthelemy, 16, confessed she had set the fire. She had the intelligence level of an 8-year-old, and was eventually placed in the Hope School in April 1924, a month before the fire. Her plan was that if the school burned down, the girls "would be allowed to go home. And then we'd get an automobile and all go for a nice ride." When the fire started to spread, Josephine helped several other girls to safety, and she suffered minor burns.
