Noble Johnson was an African-American actor starting in the silent era. Films include The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the original The Ten Commandments, The Thief of Bagdad. Talkies include Moby Dick (1930) as Qeequoq, King Kong and The Son of Kong as the tribal leader on Skull Island, Lost Horizon as one of the porters. and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon as Chief Red Shirt. Johnson also was an entrepreneur, and in 1916 he founded his own studio to produce what would be called "race films" - movies made for the African-American audience, which were ignored by the mainstream film industry.

George Spahn was a rancher who once owned the Spahn Ranch near Los Angeles, California. Spahn rented the ranch to the movie industry to film Westerns. At the ranch, he housed Charles Manson and his followers. The 1969 murders of actress Sharon Tate and six others by Manson's devotees were allegedly hatched at the Spahn Ranch. Spahn nicknamed the Manson girls, such as Squeaky, Sadie Mae, and Ouisch. The Spahn ranch and movie sets burned down from a wildfire in 1970.
