130728-7989AlonzoHorton Alonzo Horton boated grain from New York to Canada, then for health reasons moved west (at the time that was Wisconsin) and founded the small town of Hortonville. He then joined the California gold rush where he made most his money in ice, not gold. He moved to San Diego in 1867 and led much of its "new town" development.

130728-7991AltaHulett Alta Hulett taught school, and studied law in her spare time. In 1872 she passed the exam and applied for admission to the bar, but was rejected on account of her sex. She then worked toward a bill giving all women the right to practice law, subsequently becoming the first female lawyer in Illinois.

130728-7996ElishaBabcock Elisha Babcock worked as a freight clerk for a railroad, then helped develop Bell Telephone. He then moved to San Diego for his health, and followed opportunities in real estate there, including developing the famous red-roofed Hotel Coronado.

140517-9517KateMorgan Kate Morgan. AKA Lottie Bernard, was found dead at the Hotel del Coronado near San Diego.on November 29, 1892, on the exterior staircase leading to the beach, of what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. This was five days after checking into the hotel. Perhaps not surprisingly, she is thought by locals to be a ghost at the hotel. There is some controversy as to Kate Morgan being Lottie Bernard (actually Barnard). Kate' photograph provided by her employer did not match the deceased. And, it may have been murder...
