William McPherson and his two sons had a raisin ranch just north of Santa Ana complete with a packaging facility and train platform to ship them east. The ranch employed all the family members and hundreds of workers. The grape blight destroyed all the grapes in Orange county and the town of McPherson died when the land boom went bust in the 1880’s.

Columbus Tustin, with N.O. Stafford, bought 1,359 acres in Orange County, CA, and laid out the streets and built a school and a post office in what would be called the town of Tustin.. Columbus gave away many lots to entice settlers to build on them. He promoted Tustin as a dry town as time went on, feeling that Santa Ana was too corrupt with 13 saloons.

Robert English arrived in California in 1875. He ran five different ranches at one time. The largest ranch at Bolsa Chica (Westminster) was 2,500 acres. In 1886, he helped grade the Santa Fe railway as far south as the San Joaquin ranch, which belonged to James Irvine. He also operated steam threshing outfits in Orange county until 1912. Robert was Street Superintendent in Santa Ana for four years, putting in 17 miles of gravel and oil streets and eleven miles of paved road. English Street in Santa Ana is named after him.

Robert McFadden and his brother wanted to start a ranch in Orange County, CA. They shipped lumber for fences from San Francisco, and oxen had to be used to haul the loads from Anaheim Landing and Santa Ana. However, there was no road, so McFadden built their own landing and cargo pier, now known as Newport Beach and Newport Pier. Their lumber was sold to needy locals before they could use it themselves, so more lumber was ordered, leading to creating their lumber and shipping business. They sold land in Newport Beach, and established a train line between Newport Beach and Santa Ana (now gone). They helped banish saloons from Santa Ana and enacted a local prohibition in 1903.
