Ken Hubbs played baseball as a second baseman for the Chicago Cubs from 1961 to 1963. In 1962 he became the first rookie to win a Gold Glove Award, earning the 1962 Rookie of the Year Award, leading all NL rookies in games, hits, doubles, triples, runs and batting average. He also led the league in undesirable categories: striking out 129 times and grounding into 20 double plays. He grew up locally and played in the 1954 Little League World Series. Hubbs had a fear of flying and took flying lessons to overcome it. He and a friend died in his light plane crash.
