He was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 1986 at the Academy Awards, and founded a children's symphony orchestra in nearby Coachella CA.

Three other criminal trials ended with acquittals. His last conviction was in 1988 for attempted murder. He died of cancer while serving 33 years.

Dotty Kamenshek was considered by some to be the best player in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). A seven-time All Star, she led the league twice in batting, hitting .316 in 1946 and .306 in 1947, while stealing 109 bases in 1946. She later earned a degree in physical therapy, and retired as chief of physical therapy for Los Angeles County Children's Services in 1980.
