He was in "Moscow on the Hudson" as a KGB handler. At his peak of his Soviet fame in 1979, he applied for emigration. His application was rejected, and his films were suppressed nationwide. Kramarov later wrote to President Reagan, as from "one actor to another." Upon finally being allowed to leave in October 1981, Kramarov became persona non grata in the Soviet Union, and his name was removed from credits of all the Russian films that had made him so successful.
