Alexander Hamilton Willard was a blacksmith with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. At one point he was charged with sleeping while on guard duty, a military crime punishable by death. His punishment was 25 lashes a day for four days. He and his wife had 12 children, and moved to nearby Sacramento late in life.
